Gary E. Gray
Graduated
from the University of Massachusetts @ Lowell
in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology.
Since June
of 1991 I have worked for what was then STX and is now part of Raytheon (with
an extended stint as part of Hughes Aircraft).*
Prior to
recieving my degree in meteorology I worked at the Hughes/STX office out of
Lexington, MA.*
Most of
my work during that period was a Hanscom, AFB.*
During that
period I primarily did work in cloud climatology, with my most important
study done for NASA regarding the LANDSAT-7 satellite.*
Since June
of 1993 I have worked in Maryland (at the Suitland Federal Center and at the
NOAA Science Center) on the GOES and ATOVS projects.*
This work
involves developing satellite derived products for the series of GOES satellites.*
Primarily
my work has been in the GOES
Atmospheric Soundings system.*
I have also
done substantial work on the ASOS Supplemental Cloud Product
and the Thermal Gradient Winds.*
I have done
some, but much less work in the Derived Product Imagery and
Winds products.*
Currently,
I am the Project Manager on the GOES and ATOVS contracts for NOAA/NESDIS.*
Obviously,
over the past few years I've also been maintaining my web page, which is
done in my spare time.
My web page,
Millennium Weather, was formed
in early summer of 1996.
Millennium
Weather was originally intended to distribute my tropical cyclone model
(TRANTECH) data.
However,
my model was in something of a test mode, so I began issuing opinions on
the models, really to discredit my own model at times!
This led
to more comprehensive model discussions, which included my take on the situation.
During most
of the early days of this, my discussions have been posted to the ne.weather
newsgroup and to the wxobs-sne mail list.
On this
newsgroup and mail list I had also been traditionally posting winter storm
forecasts for the Northeast U.S.
This lead
to the Northeast U.S. Winter
Storm Page section of Millennium Weather.
*Millennium
Weather and any contents herein have no relation to, are not sponsored by,
and have no oversight provided by Hughes, Raytheon, or NOAA/NESDIS.
Millennium Weather
is entirely independent of these organizations.
For those interested, here's some more generic personal information:
I spent
a majority of my life in New England; I was born and raised in Rochester, MA and lived there for
21 years.
Rochester,
MA is in Southeastern Massachusetts, a short distance off of Cape Cod (west
of Wareham, MA).
I graduated
from high school in 1989 and went on the University
of Lowell (which merged with U-Mass while I was there).
I moved
down to Maryland after graduating from college, but I still consider myself
a New Englander at heart.
As such,
I'm a big Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, and New England Patriots fan (sorry Celtics,
I just don't like basketball!).
And speaking
of which, I also play ice hockey.
I have played
ice hockey since I was about 3 or 4 years old, but an auto accident put me
out of commission from age 10 through 20.
So, I'm
not as good as I could be, but since age 20 I'm proud of the progress I've
made (I'm 28 now).
My latest
team, the Washington Nationals have won several tournament awards.
These awards
include 1st place in a New York tournament, 2nd in Montreal, and 3rd in Amsterdam.
Due to some knee problems, I'm presently on hiatus from playing hockey.
I used to live in the Butcher's Hill
area of Baltimore,
MD, but now reside in Camp Springs, MD, just outside of D.C..
Other "serious" interests include politics, theology, and, of course,
the weather.
Of course,
then there are the basic, but all-important things in life...
I live with
my partner of 10+ years with our three dogs (a doberman a dalmation/mix and
one of "unknown" breed... possibly a Shar-Pei).
O.k., so, did I miss anything important??
